Editing the Wiki

Anyone can read this wiki. Editing needs the editor role in the Elementia Discord. Ask for it there.

Getting an account

You do not make one. Logging in makes it for you.

  1. Click Login at the top right.
  2. Click Discord.
  3. Approve the access request. It reads your username and which of our roles you hold. Nothing else.

You are back on the wiki, logged in. Your account name is your Discord username.

If you see “Not a member of the correct server”, join the Discord first. If you log in and every page still says you cannot edit, you do not have the editor role yet. Roles are read at login, so once someone grants it, log out and back in.

Editing a page

Open the page and click Edit this page. Change the text, write a short line in the Edit summary box saying what you changed, and click Save.

Two things worth knowing:

  • Preview shows how it will look without saving. Use it.
  • Every version is kept. Old revisions at the top of any page shows what changed, who changed it, and lets you put back an older version. Nothing you do here can be permanently broken.

If you only want to fix one part of a long page, click the Edit link beside that heading instead.

Making a new page

There is no “new page” button. You link to the page first, then follow the link.

  1. Edit a page that should point at the new one.
  2. Write a link to it: Enchanting
  3. Save. The link shows up red, meaning the page does not exist yet.
  4. Click the red link, then click Create this page.

The part before the colon is the namespace, which is the folder. Guide pages go in guide:. So guide:enchanting becomes a page in the guide, and enchanting on its own would land loose at the top level. Use lowercase and hyphens, never spaces.

Formatting

The whole thing is plain text. These are the parts you will actually use.

What you want What you write
Big heading ====== Heading ======
Section heading ===== Heading =====
Smaller heading ==== Heading ====
Bold **bold**
Italic //italic//
A command or value /fishmarket
Link to a wiki page Fishing
Link to a website Example
Bullet two spaces, then *
Numbered two spaces, then -
Horizontal line ----

Fewer equals signs means a smaller heading, which is backwards from what most people expect. Page titles use six, sections use five.

Lists are indented by two spaces, and another two spaces for each level under that:

  * a fish
  * another fish
    * a smaller fish

Tables use pipes. A header cell uses ^ instead of |:

^ Fish ^ Rarity ^
| Cod | Common |
| Coelacanth | Mythic |

To show an example without it being formatted, wrap it in
and
like the blocks above.

Leave a blank line between paragraphs. A single newline does nothing.

Images

Upload and insert are the same step.

  1. While editing, click the image icon in the toolbar. The media manager opens.
  2. Pick the namespace on the left, or type a new one. Screenshots belong in wiki.
  3. Choose your file and click Upload.
  4. Click the uploaded image. It inserts the link into your page and closes.

What it inserts looks like this:

  • The number after ? is the width in pixels. Leave it off for full size. Around 400 to 600 suits most screenshots.
  • The text after | is the caption and the alt text. Write one.
  • Spaces on either side control alignment: sits right, sits left, centres.

Use PNG for screenshots. Crop before uploading rather than scaling down in the page, so the file stays small.

The menu at the top

The bar across the top is an ordinary wiki page: navigation. Edit it like any other page and the menu changes for everyone.

It is one bullet list, and indenting an item by two more spaces makes it a dropdown item under the one above:

  * Elementia
  * First Day
  * Wiki
    * Magic and Mobs
    * Fishing and Money
  * Info

Three rules for it:

  • Keep it short. It is a menu, not a table of contents. If a section needs more than about six entries, make a page that lists them and link that.
  • Always write the label after the |. Without one the menu shows the raw page id.
  • Nothing else on that page is used. No headings, no paragraphs.

Where to put things

  • guide: is for how the server works, written for a player who has not played yet.
  • start is the front page. It is the first thing a stranger reads, so keep it to what the server is and how to get in.
  • info is for the things that are true about the server rather than the game.

If you are not sure a page belongs, write it anyway and ask in Discord. A page in the wrong place is easy to move. A page nobody wrote is not.
